As the warmth of spring approaches, it brings not only blooming flowers but also unwelcome allergies for some people. For many, the rise in pollen counts during this season triggers eye allergies, causing discomfort and irritation.

Check out these simple tips from Specsavers Optometrists for managing your eyes this spring.

Springtime sees an increase in pollen from trees and grasses, which can infiltrate our eyes and sinuses, leading to allergic reactions. This condition, known as allergic conjunctivitis, occurs when allergens cause the conjunctiva – the thin membrane covering the whites of the eyes and inner eyelids – to become irritated.

There are two main types of allergic conjunctivitis, ‘seasonal allergies’ common in spring and autumn, triggered by allergens like pollen and grass, and ‘perennial allergies’ which persist throughout the year and are often caused by allergens such as dust.

Prevention is the best strategy for managing eye allergies. Here are some tips for preventing allergies this spring:

  • Regularly vacuum and dust to minimize perennial allergens
  • Close your windows to keep pollen out and check the pollen counts before going outside
  • Wear sunglasses as they can act as a barrier against irritants and UV rays
  • Try a cold compress to relieve symptoms
  • Avoid rubbing your eyes.

When to Seek Professional Help

Some allergy symptoms might mask more serious eye conditions and so if you’re in doubt, always book in to see your optometrist. It is recommended everyone have an eye check every two years, or every year if you’re over 65. At Specsavers, an OCT scan is part of every eye test at no additional charge. This hospital grade technology can help optometrists detect eye conditions earlier, sometimes even before you’ve experienced symptoms.
