Know the Signs This Coeliac Awareness Week

As Coeliac Awareness Week kicks off today, our friend, James Jensen, from Australian Nutrition Centre is encouraging people to be aware of the symptoms, as a growing number of cases continue to go undiagnosed. Here, James explains some of the common symptoms associated with Coeliac Disease and the importance of getting tested.

WHAT IS COELIAC DISEASE?

Coeliac Disease is an autoimmune disease stemming from a reaction to the gluten protein found in wheat, rye, barley and oats, which causes damage to the small intestine and the gut. When a person with Coeliac Disease consumes gluten, their small intestine becomes inflamed and flattened, resulting in various gastrointestinal issues. Although Coeliac Disease affects approximately 1 in 70 Australians, around 80% of those remain undiagnosed!

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE COMMON SYMPTOMS?

Some common symptoms of Coeliac Disease include:

  • Abdominal pain, Bloating and Flatulence
  • Anaemia
  • Diarrhoea or Constipation
  • Brain Fog
  • Fatigue, Weakness or Lethargy
  • Weight Loss
  • Irritability

Whilst it is crucial to be aware of the signs, it is also important to know if anyone in your family suffers from the disease as it can be genetic.

IS THERE A CURE?

Whilst there is currently no cure for Coeliac Disease, early diagnosis can greatly improve long term wellbeing. Those with Coeliac Disease remain sensitive to gluten throughout their life, however, following a gluten free diet does allow the condition to be managed effectively. Once patients are diagnosed and the correct amendments are made to their diet, we often see an immediate improvement in energy levels and their overall wellbeing.

SHOULD I GET TESTED?

As a health practitioner, we strongly encourage anyone who is experiencing symptoms to get tested. However, it is important not to cut any gluten beforehand as it can cause falsely negative and unreliable results. Early diagnosis and prevention are key to ensuring you can live a healthier and happier life. Your body will be sure to thank you for it!
